My tent: Hilleberg Akto

The Akto is ideal any time you need the lightest weight, all condition solo tent. It is especially good for long trips of any kind, in any season, where light weight is a very high priority. And while it was not designed for extreme above tree line use, the Akto has proven itself on extended polar expeditions, and so will stand up well to all conditions. This is, in part, because of the Akto’s roomy configuration – it will easily accommodate you and your gear – and because of its remarkably strong Kerlon 1200 outer tent fabric. Its single pole Tunnel Tent construction, very light (very strong) Kerlon 1200 and 9 mm pole make it best suited for mobile trips, where you pitch and take down your tent every day.

I bought the Akto for my venture into solo backpacking, based on numerous reports of excellent quality and 4-season capability.
The Akto seemed a pretty good tradeoff between weight and robustness/stability, and 1.5kg is the maximum i wooul consider for a single-pole tent.
I checked the weigt myself: as supplied it weighs 1.49kg including the stuffbag, pegs + peg-bag and pole repair sleeve, but excluding the spare pole section. On first inspection the quality os construction and materials were immediately reassuring.
Pitching

The guyline structure is excellent: at each corner a guyline is threaded through the material to form a triangle with the peg at one vertex.  

The four triangles os cord are splayed out at a wide angle to give maximum support to the tent structure and each is adjustable by a sliding tensioner. Two further long guylines add support at the front and back of the tent in the plane of the pole.

 

Space

The internal space was surprisingly long.

Ventilation

In the Akto there is one triangle of mesh in the upper half of the door. Even this can be closed off with a solid flap attached by Velcro, but I regard it as an absolute minimum requirement. The problem is that the ventilation can’t be increased except by partly unzipping the door itself, which is not really an option on warm summer nights because of midges, and it wouldn't work very well anyway because both air inlet points would be on the same side and not create an airflow.


The door has a two way zipper to allow more venting though the chimney vent in the top of the vestibule.






Variable ventilation of the outer is achieved by zipped curved vents in the inward sloping walls at either end, and I would agree with the general consensus that these should be fully open in most conditions, and perhaps just partly open on the windward side in driving rain. In snow conditions when spindrift is likely they will need to be closed.

Each corner and door has a 5cm piece of reflector tape stitched to it which provided some reflective capabilities in the dark. 
The guy line fixings are securely attached and the zips are sturdy -the out zip has large metal grip tabs which I found useful to hold when wearing gloves; they could equally be as useful when in the dark. One interesting feature the zip has is it can be locked to prevent it opening in high winds.

I particularly liked the captive rods of about 30cms high within the four corners of the sleeping area as this allowed full use of the inner space and mitigated any risk for water ingress through the inner and outer tent layers touching. 
Putting the tent up is very easy with just a single central pole inserted into the fly sheet; this is then held in position by a tension adjustable pull tab shoe. You peg one end in position, walk round to the other end, pull it taught and the tent pops up. Peg everything else down and you are ready to jump in!

There are 10 pegs included, 4 hold the corners, another 2 each end hold the guy lines and the last 2 can be used as further securing on additional guy lines. As with all Hilleberg tents, the fly and inner can be left attached so going from tent packed to sitting inside is achievable within 5 minutes!

I found the adjustable ventilation very good with this tent. There’s a vent above the outer door with a wire rimmed generous cover and the upper third of the inner door has mesh insert that can be covered if required. On really hot and sticky days or nights both ends of the outer can be unzipped to allow loads of airflow through the tent. In fact Hilleberg recommend it.

For a small tent there’s actually quite a lot of room inside. It can easily take sleeping bag/ rollmat with lots of room all round. 





V-Peg

V-Peg is made from hardened aluminum, and it has specifically engineered thick yet light spine and sides to prevent bending. Its “V” cross section provides a fine balance of penetration in hard ground and holding capability in looser soil. Anodized a highly visible gold, the V-Peg also has an integrated string loop for easy removal from the ground. 



Packing

The second point is a dilemma: whether to detach the inner in the morning for packing, or leave it attached and collapse the tent as one. On most mornings the inside of the fly will be wet to some extent regardless of ventilation. On this trip of 2 days / 1 night it didn’t matter, I collapsed the whole soggy thing as one, but for trips of two or more nights Hilleberg recommend detaching the inner if the fly is wet.

BASED ON THE STABLE and roomy design of THE Allak, the new Rogen is an exceptional tent for any trip in any 3 season weather condition. 
9 mm poles and our new Kerlon 1000 outer tent fabric – which has a substantial 10 kg/22 lb tear strength – provide stability and strength for use in exposed conditions, and the dome construction makes it a great choice for tough pitching situations. It has plenty of room for two plus their gear, its two doors and two vestibules add to its versatility and comfort, and yet the Rogen weighs about 35% less than the all season Allak. 


Designed for far more than just fair weather use, the Rogen is up to true 3 season mountain conditions, which, in addition to fi ne weather, can – and often does –include high winds and heavy rain. 
To encourage more air fl ow in all weather, the outer tent stops short of going all the way to ground, but the extra high bathtub fl oor provides protection for the remaining space. 
The ingenious pole system employs two long, crossing poles for the basic shape and a shorter, stabilizing pole in the roof. Between this and the long pole sleeves on the crossing poles, the Rogen is both very easy to pitch and remarkably stable. The inner tent is made with a highly breathable, air permeable, water repellent fabric, while the all-mesh inner tent doors are oversized and the outer tent doors can be opened exceptionally wide, for superb venting. For even more air fl ow, the vestibules can be completely rolled to the side.

The Anjan is by no means a mere “summer tent.” It is engineered specifi cally to handle the spring, summer and autumn conditions of northern Scandinavia, an area that is largely  above tree line and is notorious for fi ckle weather – weather that can change from warm and sunny to cold, windy, and rainy in an instant. 
The Anjan’s outer tent stretches nearly to the ground, leaving enough space to promote constant air fl ow while still providing protection from driving rain or unseasonable snow squalls, and its bathtub fl oor is constructed to bridge the gap. 

And because of the clever pole sleeve confi guration, the outer tent can be adjusted to put it closer to the ground on the weather side. The outer tent is also constructed so both the front and the back ends can be rolled away in fine weather to provide maximum venting.





The inner tent is a combination of our inner tent fabric, an air permeable, breathable, and highly water repellent fabric, and large areas of mesh. 
This helps stave off condensation in damp times while allowing a large volume of air flow in all weathers.

Cherry, Wild / WILD FOOD FOR FREE

Prunus Avium

Widespread and frequent in hedgerows and woods, especially beech.
A lofty tree, up to 30m (100 ft) figh with shining, reddish-brown bark.
Leaves are alternative, oval sharply toothed. Five white petals; appear in clusters of 2-6 April-May.
Fruit resembles a small, dark-red, cultivated cherry.



A beautiful tree in the spring time, and again in autumn when the leaves turn yellow and red, the fruit of the wild cherr can be either sweet or bitter. It used to be sold occasionally in London on the branch.


Uses
Cherry Brandy

These are the best fruits to use for cherry brandy.
Put as many as you can find in a bottle with a couple of tablesspoons of sugar, and top up with brandy.
After 3-4 months you will have a treat waiting in your larder.







Bilberry / WILD FOOD FOR FREE

Vaccinium myrtillus


Widespread and locally abundant on heaths and moors, and as the understorey in conifer woods in northern Europe. Ashrub with hairless twigs,, growing 20-50 cm (8-20 in) high. Leaves: oval, slightly toothed. Flowers: solitary, drooping, greenish-pink globes, April-June. Fruits: small, round, black and covered with bloom, July-Sept.

Also known as whortleberries and blaeberries in Scotland, bilberries transport you more thoroughly into the role of the hunter-gatherer than perhaps any other wild food. The fruit is virtually unknown in cultivation-the blueberries bought from greengrocers are larger and less flavoursome American species.

Harvest/Pick

The bilberry may be more popular commercially if picking it were not so laborious. The shrub grows low, often largely concealed by dense heather, and the berries form in nothing like the concentrations of, say, blackberries. So even on the moors where the bush grows in abundance, gathering any quantity can involve the thorough searching of a fair-sized patch of land.
On parts of the Continent, bilberry gathering has been partially mechanised with the help of a large combing device known as a peigne, though this takes away much of the fun of hunting for the berries, the discovery of clusters under the leaves, the bloom rubbing away on one's fingers.


Uses

The succulent, winey berries may be eaten raw, but they also feature in recipes-some of the most interesting come from Yorkshire where they are made into pies, known as 'mucky-mouth pies', a feature of funeral teas.
Another Yorkshire touch with bilberries is add a few sprigs of mint to the stewed fruit and jams.
The two flavours complement each other perfectly.

A classic northern recipe which sets the fruits in a kind of Yorkshire pudding.

4 tbsp flour
1 egg
1 large cup of milk
2 tbsp of brown sugar
250 g (8 oz) approx. of bilberries

Make a thinnish batter by beating the egg with the sugar and then slowly adding the milk. Stir in the sugar and the bilberries.
Pour into a greased tin.
Bake in a medium oven for 30 minutes.

Cow Parsley / WILD FOOD FOR FREE

Anthriscus Sylvestris


Cow parsley is the closest wild relative of cultivated chervil, and shares the same fresh, spicy flavour.
Cow parsley is the first common umbelliferate to come into flower in the spring. This is often enough to identify it, but it resembles other species, some of which are poisonous.
The most dangerous sources of confusion are fool's parsley and hemlock, and i include a table showing important differences between them. However, this is not a substitute for a well-illustrated field guide.
Hemlock also has an offensive, mousey smell when any part of it is bruised. Fool's parsley has unmistakable drooping green bracts growing beneath the flowers, giving them a rather bearded appearance.

Harvest/Pick

Pick cow parsley as soon as the stems have developed sufficiently to be identified. Later in the year it becomes rather bitter. It dries well.
Do not gather the plant from the sides of major roads as it will have been contaminated by car exhausts.

Uses

Small quantities of cow parsley make a lively addition to salads, particularly cold potato, tomato, and cucumber.
It also makes a good flavouring for hot haricot beans, and with chopped chives, tarragon and parsley, the famous 'omelettes fines herbes'.
A second crop of non-flowering leaves often appears in the autumm, remaining green throughout the winter. Those able to identify the plant from its leaves can pick some fresh for winter soups and casseroles, hot baked potatoes, and in the French country dish, cassoulet.







Bittercress Hairy / WILD FOOD FOR FREE

Cardamine Hirsuta


Hairy bittercress is a pleasantly tangy plant, fleshier and sweeter than watercress.


Harvest/Pick

Hairy bittercress is a one of the first edible weeds to be pickable early in the year.


Uses

The whole plant can be eaten, and has a pleasantly sweet, mild peppery flavour. It can be used in salads, sandwiches, and as a substitute for cress, and has an affinity with cream cheese.
The slightly more spicy leaves of lady's smock, or cuckooflower (another member of the Cardamine family, C. pratensis), can be used in the same way. A medium, hairless perennial, cuckooflower is a common and widespread species of roadsides, river banks, ditches and damp grassland. The name 'cuckooflower' is shared at a local level with a number of other spring flowers, as they were an indicator of when the cuckoo was first heard in the year. However, for Cardamine pratensis, the belief that the first flowering of the plant heralds the spring song of the cuckoo has been proven in a number of areas throughout the country, from Farnham in Surrey to Dumfries in Scotland. Flowers April to June.




Chickweed / WILD FOOD FOR FREE

Stellaria media

Gardens, cultivated and waste ground.
Widespread and common throughout Europe.
A weak annual which tends to straggle and creep before it has reached any height.
It has lines of fine hairs down the stem.
Leaves: oval, bright green and soft.
Flowers: throughout the year, tiny white star-like flowers with five deeply divided petals.

Chickweed is generally regarded as a bane in gardens, but try using the chickweed instead of composting it. Those without gardens should be able to find some by any field edge, even in the winter months, but avoid areas that may have been sprayed with weedkiller.

Harvest/Pick
The pale, soft green leaves of chickweed can be picked in almost any month of the year, except when there has been a hard frost. In fact they are often at their freshest in late autumm or early in the new year. They are one of the tenderest of wild greens, with a taste reminiscent of corn salad or mild lettuce.
The leaves are too small to be picked individually, so strip bunches of the whole plant; the stems are just as tender to eat as the leaves. Or choose the younger, greener sprigs more discriminately and cut with scissors.
(Avoid confusion with the stiff, hairy, mouse-ear chickweed, and the smooth, upright, red-stemmed petty spurge, which has a slight superficial resemblance to this chickweed.)

Uses:

Cooked Chickweed
Wash the sprigs well, and put into a saucepan without any additional water. Add a knob of butter or a spoonful of oil, seasoning and some chopped spring onions.
Simmer gently for no more than 2 minutes (any longer and both taste and texture will go and the chickweed begin to resemble strands of green string), turning all the time. Finish off with a dash of lemon juice or a sprinkling of grated nutmeg.

Winter of Early Spring Salad
Mix young chickweed shoots with equal quantities of dandelion leaves, garlic mustard and hairy bittercreess (for a hint of pepperiness). Dress with a light, sharp saled dressing made from sunflower oil and lemon juice.
